Forestry Technician II - EXAM (Promotional)

Under direction, is responsible for supervising, inspecting, and/or participating in more complex forestry work; performs related duties as required.

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
  • Supervises small crews of employees engaged in the pruning and removal of trees, to include performance evaluations, leave requests, and initiating disciplinary recommendations;
  • Inspects and evaluates tree damage and/or need for maintenance and takes the necessary action to resolve the problem;
  • Inspects work of staff and/or contractors engaged in tree pruning and planting, tree removal, and stump removal; verifies related work is completed per departmental and national standards and/or contracted terms;
  • Determines appropriate manner of completing jobs taking into consideration surrounding obstacles and electrical wires;
  • Advises forestry crew regarding the techniques and methods used in pruning, removal , and planting of trees according to departmental and national standards;
  • Trains and ensures employees follow proper work and safety procedures, equipment usage, and operating procedures;
  • Makes work schedules and assignments for subordinate staff;
  • Collects data, prepares reports , and maintains records on work completed and other forestry related activities;
  • Utilizes a mobile device to document work order status;
  • Utilizes hand-held GPS equipment to document and transmit the coordinates of tree locations;
  • Participates in all phases of tree pruning, planting, maintenance, and/or removal;
  • Drives trucks to and from worksite;
  • Responds to emergency storm calls on a twenty-four hour basis;
  • May climb trees using ropes and saddle to reach and prune or remove limbs;

  • May drive commercial motor vehicles and/or operate an aerial lift.

In order to qualify for this promotional examination, you must be a current City employee and now have, or have had during your continuous service with the City, permanent status in the classification of Forestry Technician I. You must also meet the Minimum Qualifications listed below:

Three (3) years of experience pruning and/or removing trees using a rope and saddle method for tree climbing.

Possession of a valid driver's license.

Some positions may require possession of a certificate of completion of an approved tree climbing course from an institute recognized by the Tree Care Industry Association or the International Society of Arboriculture.

Some positions may require possession of a valid, Class A or B, commercial motor vehicle operator's license allowing operation of vehicles with air brakes.

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, PROMOTIONAL , eligible list for this classification and will replace the names of applicants on the current eligible list. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. The examination process will consist of a multiple-choice exam weighted 100% covering Reading Comprehension, Problem Sensitivity, Public Relations, Map Reading, and Knowledge of Tree Trimming, Arboriculture & Safety.

Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
