Park Maintenance Technician

The City of Pierre seeks an enthusiastic individual to join our team in making Pierre one of the best places to live, work, and visit. This position is responsible for performing a variety of building and grounds maintenance and repair duties including irrigation projects. Responsible for snow removal. Maintains grounds by mowing grass along with pruning and removal of trees and shrubs.

This position performs technical duties in the maintenance of city parks.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Operates a variety of tools and equipment to maintain park grounds.
  • Maintains tools and equipment.
  • Participates in ground maintenance activities; installs and repairs landscaping.
  • Mows grass and cuts weeds.
  • Inspects playground equipment to ensure safety and identify repair or maintenance needs.
  • Plants, trims, and removes trees.
  • Repairs and remodels bathrooms and offices.
  • Assists in installing and maintaining irrigation systems.
  • Lays sod.
  • Collects leaves and other debris.
  • Installs and repairs fencing.
  • Pours concrete pads for memorial buildings.
  • Assists in the construction and repair of picnic shelters, shades structures, etc.
  • Participates in snow removal operations.
  • Collects litter at city parks.
  • Lowers and raises flags on city property.
  • Attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance methods and materials.
  • Knowledge of landscaping principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of building maintenance principles.
  • Skill in the operation of a variety of grounds maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Parks Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include department policies, safety regulations, equipment operation manuals, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement weather conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance of city parks and park facilities. Successful performance helps ensure well-maintained parks for use by the public.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to resolve problems, provide information, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of specialized equipment such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Qualifications

Experience working on irrigation systems would be beneficial. Skill in operating equipment and tools used in park operations such as tractors, mowers, snow removal equipment, tree removal equipment and power tools including chainsaws.
